Celebrating 100 posts

I'm really happy to say that The Drama Llama has reached 100 posts! To be honestreaching 20 or even 50 posts did not seem accomplishable. A quiet person and observer offline, I wasn't quite sure I'd be able to maximize my thoughts and put them into a blog post every week. To celebrate and as a big thank you to all who have visited and follow, I conjured up some fun lists of people, movies, and memories that have sparked my love affair with film and keep it going.

Thank you again and here's to 100+ more entries and many great moments in entertainment!

10 Memorable Movies From My Childhood
My family, relatives, then friends, and friends of friends took me to see Titanic. I probably saw it about a dozen times, and each visit was the theater was sold out. The Parent Trap as an actual classroom fieldtrip. As a school variety show I performed a number from That Thing You Do! with friends. The Mothman Prophecy was a late-night showing with my aunt, and I remember every red stop light on the way home scared the pants out of me. Versus memories of what I remember watching at home, movie theater experiences from my childhood are more vivid.

By frame: Titanic, Hercules, Michael, The Parent Trap, Jack Frost, The Truman Show, That Thing You Do!, Little Women, The Mothamn Prophecies, Catch Me If You Can

10 Movies I Saw In Theaters More than 5x
Oh, there was a time when movies were worth seeing four or five times. This is a moment I look back and can be proud of my records (Inception = 7x), and wonder where my taste went (Star Wars prequels, really?). My love for Chicago (overrated, yes, 6x), Daredevil (underrated, at least 4/5x), and The Dark Knight (6x) still stands strong. And, don't get me started on Walk the Line (complete obsession with Johnny Cash at the time) or Hollywood Homicide (in love with Josh Hartnett...where is he these days?!)

By Frame: Titanic, Inception, Star Trek, The Dark Knight, Chicago, Hollywood Homicide, Walk The Line, Spiderman, Daredevil, Star Wars Prequels

5 Bloggers I First Discovered
These chaps and gals are the first bloggers that inspired me when I first started to keep going. A bit of perfectionist I am, they showed me the designs change, opinions vary, and community is everything!

10 Classics I've Seen on the Big Screen
As my mother home schooled me in high school, one of her biggest passions rubbed off on me: Classic Film. Luckily, I've lived around a few cinemas who don't wait for a 3d re-release or anniversary to screen classics like The Birds or West Side Story. Any opportunity we have to see one on the big screen, we jump at the chance. There are plenty more sitting idly by on my wishlist.

By Frame:Dirty Dancing, The Birds, Rear Window, Psycho, Singing in the Rain, West Side Story, The Wizard of Oz, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones Raiders and Last Crusade

10 Eternally Perfect People
These actors and actresses emphasize what it means to be the bee's knees, a cut above the rest, and any other euphemism of perfection. Judy and Leo have been my #1 faves since I was a little girl. But the rest gas and pals I grew up loving as I saw their amazing work grow. They all make my time as a fan absolutely scrumtrulescent.

By Frame: Judy Garland, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Emma Watson, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Audrey Hepburn, Andrew Lincoln

5 Posts That Are Special Faves

10 Reasons I Became a Film Student
Not any one person or film has inspired me to become a film student. These are just a small few fish in the large pond of movies, people, and performances I could give credit to. To me they are or have created groundbreaking, electrifying, sad, funny, and infinitely beautiful work.

By Frame: Network, There Will Be Blood, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan, Marion Cotillard in La Vi En Rose, Olivia De Havilland in The Snake Pit, the fiercely underrated Vivien Leigh in A Streetcar Named Desire, Susan Hayward in I'll Cry Tomorrow, Shaun of the Dead, and Barefoot in the Park.

10 Films "I Haven't Gotten Around To Yet"
Most films I just haven't gotten around to yet, sincerely, like Shawshank Redemption or Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Some I have a lot of anxious excitement to see like Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Lawrence of Arabia; then I remember how long they all are. Others, I just wonder if they are worth the hype like 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and Saving Private Ryan. "I just haven't gotten around to these yet."

By Frame:Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Avatar, Saving Private Ryan, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Shawshank Redemption, Mulholland Drive, Goodfellas, Crash, Lawrence of Arabia.

10 Cool Characters
What makes up great movies and television shows besides imaginative and creative stories? Characters! A plethora more had to be exempted from this list. These are some of my absolute favorites from film and television who seemed to be made up of adventurers.

By Frame: George Bailey from It's A Wonderful Life, Ellie from Up!, Marion Ravenwood from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Daniel Craigs' James Bond, Doctor Who, Dory from Finding Nemo, Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles from Pushing Daisies, Michael Scott from The Office, Walter from Fringe, Belle from Once Upon A Time

10 Movie Quotes I Use In Real Life
On a daily basis, in conversation with friends and family, I will begin to talk in movie quotes. It's inevitable! Sometimes it's a slip here or there, something random that pops into my head...but these seem to be the ones I use whether the situation calls for it or not.

"You in danger girl." - Dirty Dancing

"Be nice until it's time to not be nice." - Roadhouse

"Help me, help you!" - Jerry Maguire

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" - Network

"I'm not an owl!" - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

 “Argo **** yourself!- Argo

“I’ll be back.” - The Terminator

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." - Gone with the Wind

"Hotdog!" - It's A Wonderful Life

"I want to be alone." - Grand Hotel

10 Films That Remain Temporarily UnReviewable
I won't say these will never earn a post at The Drama Llama. It's just that I have a hard time conjuring up words to describe - not exactly what they mean to me - but my perceptions of them. Every time I type, sentences just seem to go around and around in circles. There are so many things to be said and too much time to go on and on about them...and everything ends up incoherent blabble. Some day soon....

By Frame: Inception, The Fountain, The Tree of Life, Beasts of the Southern Wild, A Star is Born, Gone with the Wind, Amour, Lars and the Real Girl, Glenngary Glenn Ross, 12 Angry Men

Some Reasons I Can't Wait for The Great Gatsby (2013)

Based on F. Scott Fitzgeralds' novel The Great Gatsby, over-the-top extraordinaire director Baz Luhrmann has adapted the critically acclaimed novel to the big screen. Set in the 1920s Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is a young stock broker who gets caught up in the glitzy wealthy lives of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Daisy (Carrey Mulligan). Although identities and appearances are not what they seem.

Like many bibliophiles it's been a year since the first initital news of this film broke out. After rescheduling the release, the time has finally come for the movie to hit theaters. I've been absolutely gawking over this excessive 3D extravaganza. In fact there are quite a few reasons that has me looking forward to The Great Gatsby.

the costumes
A lover of the flapper style and history buff to the prohibition era, I'm excited to see some beautiful fashion. Costume designer Catherine Martin with Prada has created some exquisite wardrobes. The glitz and glam of the jazz days inspires me to actually dress up for when I see this in cinemas.

Leonardo DiCaprio
The mentioning of his name probably doesn't spark much surprise around here. I'll use him in any post whether it's relevant to his brilliance or not. Since DiCaprio will be making an brief exit from acting for a while, he is everywhere promoting The Great Gatsby. That only makes the movie anticipation heightened for me, and also delays the inevitable void I'll feel during his film break.

the sets
Similar to Oz: The Great and Powerful, this looks like a sensational eye-candy combination of production sets and CGI. The four photos below don't even express the sure scale of the film and what I'm hoping is the whopping amount of escapism into an era I so love to dive into.

The staredowns
In honesty, the love story between Daisy and Gatsby. I'm head over heels. And though I'm not a big fan of Carey Mulligan, her chemistry with Leo might be the thing that glues this together.

 Isla Fisher
This redhead is never in enough films - or so it seems, but when she is, her performance is always that beautiful light at the end of a miserable two-hour trainwreck film. I honestly did not recognize that this was her. This casting choice might be 'I did not see that coming' moment of 2013.

The over-the-topness
Every Luhrman film is theatrical, to say the least. I'm not even going to pretend that the entire trailer doesn't have moments of 'yesh' and 'oh lordy so pretty'. Check out 0:37 in the trailer below. I can't rate the acting as of yet but the exuberance of energy is contagious. The 2D version of the film looks like it jumps off the screen, and 3D might have you feeling the confetti and champagne flowing.

Cheers for May 10th!

A Gif Guide to Movie Blogging

Movie blogging all starts with watching something right?...

Should you go to the theaters and see something new?

Or watch something you've seen before
but just haven't written about?

In no time at all, a decision is and must be made!

Your critic's hat is on...

and let the movie watching begin!

Two hours later....

The ending credits have finally rolledand you feel like

Perhaps the director, script, actors, cement, lightbulbs, inanimate objects work together so beautifully and cohesively YOUR LIFE HAS BEEN FOREVER CHANGED.

Though there are movies that turn out to be okay.
Nothing really fulfilled your expectations.

Hopefully, you didn't fall asleep!

Maybe at the very least the actors were hot,

and it wasn't so terribly terrible you wanted to....

Time to blog! The movie dances in your head as you think about what to write...

A message behind the movie was...?

But you also thought it was....

And THEN that one scene was like....

You're saying what you want but maybe not entirely sure...

Should you see what other bloggers wrote?

Thousands of reviews for one movie?!?

Many are not good....

They liked this movie

or hated it?!

BUT THEN there's THAT one blog that expresses your every emotion and thought that you had....

You begin to think: WHAT the HELL are you blogging for?

Maybe walking away will do you you some good. You can start writing other posts that'll be better!

But you already have one post started....

HEY! It's your thoughts and your words!
Final edits NEED to be completed.

It's time to officially publish!

Promote, promote, promote!

You are now facing the possibility of haters

or maybe a fan club?!

Maybe you don't get any comments...

Maybe you only get one?

Or even tons!!

From the outside it all looks so easy

But inside:

Remember, any way it turns out:

There's always another movie...

I'm not completely sure what Karl Lagerfeld's latest short film about Coco Chanel is about except Keira Knightley is starring..and so far it's quite pretty. The whole film is set to release during Chanel's Cruise Collection in May.

3 Guys 1 Movie coverCool World. A 1992 flick with Brad Pitt that makes me feel exceptionally old.

Lights Camera Reaction spotlights Kirsten Dunsts' emotionally layered performance in Melancholia.

+ Congratulations to Mettel Ray for reaching 3 years!

+ Goddess Jessica Chastain is in talks to star in Christopher Nolan's latest flick titled Interstellar. If chosen, she will star alongside Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey in a sci-fi thriller about gravitational theories I could never understand. Nevertheless, Nolan will make it all worth it - especially if Chastain is on board!

+ Every day we get closer and closer to the cinema release to Man of Steel. Oh, the pretty Henry & Amy.

+ See the Disney villains as Gossip Girlers. These sketches are supposed to bring a more beautiful side to the classic animated characters...Huh.

+ Say Good afternoon to a Gemma Arterton mega-post at Ohnotheydidnt. I particularly like her spotlight on weight loss and female actresses...

"‘There are so many good, intelligent actresses doing this, and I just think, “Why does that go hand in hand with the acting profession?” It shouldn’t. It lets the side down. It lets down team woman.’

+ Oh, Scotty, I can't wait for Star Trek: Into Darkness.A third installment is already in talks, the trailers keep getting better as well as press tour

No love, however believable, will turn this tide. DAMN IT

The Victory Tours have begun! Katniss and Peeta's first stop is District 11. After fumbling with their speeches in front of 1/3 of the population, a boiling uprising of silence began. The Capitol's response? Well, gunshots were heard outside the Justice Building. And innocent bystanders are even sacrificial to President Snow... That's what you missed with The Reading Games!

After the sickening sound of bullets have rung out through the arena around District 11, Haymitch walks Katniss and Peeta through the Justice Building. From the description of the room they go to talk, I can only guess that it's Room of Requirement 2.0 (page 64)? At the top of the dome in a room of old books, furniture, ledgers, and rusty weapons, the trio square off.

Katniss' earlier sarcasm of plea to Peeta comes true as she has to reveal her plans for the tourand President Snow's visit. Hey, Peeta, remember how I told you I was kind of faking being in love with you? Well, I really need you to forget about that now and act extra in love with me or the President might kill Gale.

Though I don't necessarily agree with Peeta's reaction of throwing things, I am on his side when it comes to the team keeping details away from him. They treat BreadBoy almost like an outsider - in the way that every person thinks they can handle this entire cluster**** situation on their own. (page 64)

"I have people I care about, too, Katniss!"

I've noticed signs of evolution with Katniss though with asking for help. In The Hunger Games she had a love/hate relationship with the team. And, she was forced to work with Peeta during the games. In the arena it was about her making it out alive without having to kill another tribute. After accepting Peeta's help, and even Rue's, Katniss' come to accept she can't pull this off on her own.

Now, Peeta has to face the fact that the money he offered to Thresh and Rue's families had them or any other innocent civilians killed. Again, Katniss knew what romantic actions to take with Peeta in the arena by what medicine she was sent while Peeta wasn't given anything at all - and acted out of what remains good intentions to help her survive. Peeta tries to help but without the knowing anything ends up making things worse.

"Was that really the only time you kissed Gale?"

Peeta's only  question to Katniss after her confiding to him is short but makes me wonder. Is he considering what they could make out of their faux pairing on the Victory Tour? Is he summing up that Katniss had genuine compassion for him in the games and that's why he was alive? (page 70)

But as always, there's more intense matters at hand. Though Katniss learns to turn on a smile, something is boiling underneath the surface of Panem's districts. People they visit and make their speeches to are cordial but a riot could be unleashed any second. They may be holding off until after the Victory Tour, but something is definitely going to go down. Despite how deep Katniss and Peeta are making a show of 'their love', how draining it is to know it might not be worth any of it.

"No love, however, believable, will turn this tide."

I was wondering if and when any signs of Post Traumatic Stress would kick in for Peeta and Katniss. The two of them suffered in District 12 struggling to survive with what they could get their hands. But nothing like the murderous escapade in the arena. Katniss had a brief flashback of Rue being killed, but now they're more severe Effie has to give her drugs to sleep. And they only make her dreams worse. The only cure of her troubles is Peeta - who comes to her train compartment at night to hold her. AGAIN, Peeta is her most grounded part of this chaos. (page 71-72)

The entire series summed up in one gif?

Collins balances, or should I say jerk, my hope of Katniss and Peeta, or Katniss with Gale, or her on her own. When it seems only a friendship is in sight, a closer intimacy sparks up. Then a challenge arises to bring them both back to reality.DAMN IT.

But I'm not happy or should I say it's completely unexpected that we only get a sense of what District 11 was. Only one chapter is dedicated to their tours; they're strung through the rest of the country and back to the Capitol.

Like / as a Harry Potter fan, I grew tired of only reading about most characters being from Gryffindor or Slytherin. Rarely did we ever get a deeper sense of Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.

I see now that the Quarterly Quell is going to be the focus of Catching Fire. It's understandable; a slow uprising can't be the only focus of the book. I just thought there would be more prominent obstacles like the uprising in District 11 and its bloody results. Maybe it will come into focus later on?

Even though it's all a rouse for Katniss and Peeta to make-believe they are in love in public, I'm terribly disappointed we still don't get some sort of proposal scene with Peetniss. (page 70 - 73) Their determination to fake it is all summed up pretty quickly, and his devastation is at least expressed because he wanted their romance to be real.

But what's done is done in front of the Capitol, and President Snow comes to give his "congratulations". Katniss asks silently if she met his approval. And Snow is signaled to her with a shake of his head. WHICH DIRECTION DID IT GO? YES OR NO? (page 74)

Until next week, tributes!

My Essentials: Audrey Hepburn

$

Actress, loving mother, philanthropist, legendary style icon. What isn't Audrey Hepburn known for? Her role as Holly Go Lightly from Breakfast at Tiffanys and collection of inspiring quotes about achieving happiness with kindness has made her a mainstay for generations.

Her life is a story most already know. Hepburn was born in war torn Europe during World War II. She aspired to be a ballerina but transformed into a - if not the most recognized - elegant actress on the big screen. She garnered recognition in her first major motion picture Roman Holiday with an Academy Award performance as Best Actress. In following roles like Breakfast At Tiffanys and Sabrina, her presence of style and grace took off with audiences. After retiring from film in her later years, Hepburn's work with organizations like UNICEF continued to catapult her distinctly quiet and regal allure.

When I entered the sphere of Audrey Hepburn, I'm not sure what came first: her fashion, films, or compassion. The three seem to be so closely intertwined. I remember singing her songs like "Wouldn't It Be Loverly"or "Moon River" since I was a young girl. Her filmography is fairly dramatic sprinkled with lighter comedies. In all of them wearing evening gowns or every day wear, she has a rich glowing presence and attitude about life that carried off-screen.

Though recognized often for her fashion, clothes don't merely make the lady. But Hepburn seems to be one of the everlasting, blissfully graceful ladies of all-time. Like Marilyn Monroe with sex appeal and James Dean with young rebellion, Hepburn's regality is often imitated and can't ever be duplicated - making her one of my essential movie stars and all-time favorites.

The Nun's Story (1959)
Starring: Audrey Hepburn and Peter Finch
Directed by:Fred Zinnemann

Summary:Gabrielle "Gabby" Van Der Mal has aspirations to become a missionary nursing sister in the Belgian Congo. Living in the convent tests her faith, patience and strength as she struggles to obtain her deepest hope.

This film had no hopes of being produced because studios asked who wanted to see a two hour movie about a nun. When Audrey Hepburn signed on, the naysayers clamored to make the project take off. And, it did! However, times have changed and I'm not sure how interested audiences still are about seeing a two hour movie about a nun. Though a slow drama, I thoroughly enjoy this film. It wouldn't be the same without Hepburn!

Wait Until Dark (1967)
Starring: Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin
Directed by: Terence Young
Summary: A blind woman is terrorized by thugs in her apartment

Having taken lessons on what it physically entails to live without seeing, Hepburn is often overlooked for her stunning realistic performance.

Other film favorites: Two for the Road (1967), Charade (1963), Breakfast at Tiffanys (1961), Love in the Afternoon (1957)

I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it.

Book VS Movie: Silver Linings Playbook

$
0
0

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, Jacqueline Weaver
Directed by: David O'Russell

The book and film summary falls along the same line.  Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) is a middle-aged man who is released into his parents' custody after serving eight months in a mental health facility. Determined to reconcile with his estranged wife, he is fully invested in his  physical and emotional health unlike ever before. After an  introduction to a friend's sister-in-law, Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), the two strike up an uncommon friendship sharing a common ground of spousal loss and neuroses.

One of my favorite aspects of the novel, which was completely removed for the film, was that Pat believed his life was a movie designed by God. It wasn't a belief system that forced repercussions or rewards for Pat's decisions and actions. If he didn't exercise it was a sin; if he did, he was in for blessings galore. Rather it was a re-enforcing system for Pat to stay on track to winning Liz back and played into his EXCELSIOR motto.  This part of the plot is completely removed in the film because one could only think that perhaps audiences wouldn't fall for this part of his behavior and personality. This is about the biggest con of the movie that I have.

Best Bits: Author Matthew Quick gives Pat an ultra-unique voice mixing emotional instability with naivete. Cooper captures the rhythm of the character with spot-on accuracy.  It was pretty much like seeing the main character jump off the page onto the screen, and why he was one of my favorite TOP picks for the 2012 Oscar race.

Running up is the casting of supporting players - Robert DeNiro, Jackie Weaver and Chris Tucker. Even though they removed the 'God' aspect of the book, I enjoyed that the other characters are similar to how they are written. Specifically the kinship between Tucker and Cooper stayed, and the impact of the father's temper had on Pat's upbringing was also kept intack. The parallel scenes of the fist fight in the attic between Pat and Pat Sr., to Pat Sr. crying to Pat Jr. is great condensed moments of their relationship.

One of my favorite features of Russells' past work is his music selection. For films like The Fighter he knows how to rev up a small scene with the use of music. I appreciated not only the mix of music genres, but that Russell really used Pat's wedding song as a trigger for his problems.

Not Best Bits: And, this is where I became the internet's least favorite person. I wanted so much to love Jennifer Lawrence like the rest of the universe, but I felt the role of Tiffany  falls really short. For me, I felt a majority of this performance was over-hyped and shadowered other worthier Best Actress contenders.

When Tiffany comes onto the scene, I feel like too soon she's declared as his cure to us, the audience, by how she is the total opposite yet equal to Pat. He doesn't discover what we know until the very end, which means much of the film is spent with Tiffany showing up wherever Pat is to whip out verbal venom. I think about a million exclamation points were used in the script because - to me - Lawrence only seemed to yell throughout the entire film.

I don't feel the movie goes into Pat's psyche deeply enough. To him, every cloud is a silver lining, and his passion to win back his wife is far more than a few trips to therapy and a connection with an equally unbalanced counterpart.

Equally, Tiffany (as searched online) is mostly absorbed as a sex addict. Maybe O'Russell failed Lawrence, or Lawrence fails Tiffany, but her character is a sex addict but not for any reason. *SPOILER* Tiffany's husband obsessed was physically addicted to Tiffany. He couldn't get enough of her sexually, but she was getting tired of their rampant sex life. After a fight and he went to the mall to buy Victoria's Secret lingerie for her to help her feel sexier about herself, he was killed by a drunk driver. She has multiple partners after his death  (i.e. have sex in the dark) so she can re-imagine being with her husband. *END SPOILER* I know Tiffany explains how her husband died to Pat, but I felt the emotional background to her present life was completely lost.

Why It's Good: Bradley and Jennifer's chemistry ties the film together. As a couple they find all of their qualities accepted and reflected in the other person. Even though the book ends differently, and this can be accepted as another difference in plot. The film ends with a  hilarious dance routine that culminates the film. It's not about being perfect ten. Together they become the other's savior, and like the book, the movie gives hope that everyone can fall find that one person they belong with.

Rating: TIE.
Silver Linings Playbook ultimately gives Cooper an opportunity to declare himself as a damn good actor and a cast who supports him all the way through. The movie itself does what it can - be exceptionally different from the book while still tugging on the heartstrings of a reader...

In a wonderfully shocking appearance at the 2013 Met Gala, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway turned up with platinum blond locks. I'm usually not one to comment on fashion fails or wins, but this make-over gets two thumbs up from me!

Top 10 Favorite Episodes of The Office

$

For nine years The Office has graced Thursday nights on NBC. The show had its hilarious moments, crazy relationships, and your usual office chaos like fake fires and conference room meetings about dementors from Harry Potter.

Watching the show practically since the beginning, it's hard for me to realize that we'll be saying goodbye. Though the show had its ups and downs in terms of good or all right episodes, watching the Scranton branch and all of the hell is broke loose has sadly come to its fond farewell what feels like too soon. Just the other day I remember watching my first episode of Casino Night and being instantly hooked.

I thought it'd be fun to share my top ten favorite episodes. This list wasn't easy and churned up many more favorite moments - so another post will be coming of pairings, musings, and more. (HUGE thanks to tumblr and dundermifflinscranton for all the images in this post!) Enjoy and feel free to share your favorite episodes!

Runner Ups: The Fire, The Duel, Murder

Goodbye Toby
Finally, the emotional vampire from annex of Human Resources is leaving: Toby. Okay I don't have too much resentment towards him but Michael couldn't wait to throw a huge party in his departure's honor. Jim is planning to pop the question but is thwarted by Andy proposing to Angela. Tobys' replacement comes to be a woman who is practically one and the same as Michael, Holly...who might be one of the best things to happen to Dunder Mifflin since World War One.

The Injury
We all know Dwight would do anything and everything for his best friend and boss, Michael. So when our favorite manager calls in one morning frantically explaining how he burned his foot on a grill, Schrute leaps to help - taking off in his car even after crashing into a telephone pole. Temporarily he's sidetracked from vomiting before going to save the day. As employees in the office are irritated by Michael's over-exaggerated injury, Dwight is suffering from a real concussion has to be taken to the hospital. "You can fire me, I don't work in this van!" .. and don't forget, Ryan is dead.

The Dundies
Oh, so many of Michael's alter egos are on display through his hosting of The Dundies. All of the office is in attendance with their families as Scott MC's amazing awards like Whitest Sneakers and Bushiest Busiest Beaver. Office secretary Pam has a little too many drinks after a tiff with her fiance (at the time), and who can forget the look on Jim's face when she drunkenly plants one on him.

Survivor Man
In a rut, Michael decides he is in need of a big adventure. So why not go to the hilt of Scranton's wooded areas to live by himself in the wild for three days. Of course, Dwight watches from afar as Michael rips apart his pants to make a tent and then tapes them together again so he can adequately hunt for food. Meanwhile, Jim learns how hard it is to be in charge. Several of the employee's birthday parties are coming up and all goes awry when he eliminates individual celebrations. We learned never to underestimate the power of Michael's genius as boss.

The Return
New employee Andy is in a race against himself for being Michael's new favorite employee and becoming the most annoying desk buddy to Jim. Meanwhile, Dwight who had been wrongly fired goes in search of employment elsewhere. Jim's got Andy under control - for the most bit until he punches a wall...which was a little bit of an overreaction.

Booze Cruise
Corporate has sent Michael a representative/consultant for a leadership training exercise. Going above and beyond what's necessary Michael takes the employees out on a booze cruise in the middle of January. As captain of the Scranton branch setting out onto  Lake Wallenpaupack, he becomes the boss of dancing above all else. He does manage to teach Jim never, ever give up on his love for Pam - who had just gotten engaged.

Cafe Disco
It never really seemed like anything got done at the office - what with Pretzel Days, fires started with Pita breads, and Michael's general lack of real actual work. But it surprised many when Scranton pulled out to be the most efficient branch in the company. Perhaps it can all be given credit to stress relievers like Cafe Disco - a room with some music, a glittery disco ball, and the office gang dancing it out.

Casino Night
This was an episode we were all waiting for - at least JAMs were so anticipating, longing and imagining this moment. Michael holds a casino night in the warehouse, where winner of most chips earned would receive money to give to a charity of their choice. The major and probably most important point of this episode was when Jim - bestie to Pam - finally confessed he was in love with her. After she turns him down, the kiss they shared in the workplace. (Remember, at the time we were forced to wait an excruiciating summer for the new season to start - so we could find out if they finally got together?)

Dinner Party
We all knew Michaels' relationship with Jan was f----ed up. But we never really knew - or our psyches were never scarred until we got a peek inside their living situation at Michaels' condo. Jim with Pam, Angela with Andy, and Dwight with a random stranger join the cursed duo for one crazy ass dinner party where we learn: Jan thinks Pam and Michael slept together, Michael had three vasectomies and sleeps on a bed pedestal like a dog, and no PLEASE - don't take your male assistant by the hand to make him a man.

Goodbye, Michael
It's pretty obvious from my choices above that Michael was and will forever be one of my characters. Steve Carell - didn't make the show what it came to be on his own- but it was a relieving night when the departure of Michael Scott was everything it was cracked up to be. Literally - cracked up, hilarious, roflwtsdmfojas (rolling on the floor laughing with tears streaming down my face of joy and sadness). Michael said goodbye to every character in his own distinct way. Joining Holly in Colorado, Michael finally accepted that Duner Mifflin was where his best friends were, but he finally met someone who was his real home.

+ I see Ryan Gosling and sweat. But news media is reporting it as a behind the scenes outtake from his latest flick Only God Forgives.

+ 14 Disney Characters are created as Modern Day College Students. They are all pretty awesome.

Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney was finally released (by finally, I mean I've been waiting for this like over a year!). It's just them in space and the cinematography caused me motion sickness. Can't wait!

+ Also Marion Cotillard & Jean Dujardin in a movie together? It's french, they and everything is beautiful.

+ I'm not sure what to think of The Butler trailer but John Cusack as Richard Nixon is NOT IT.  But Severus Snape as Ronald Reagan, I'm in.

+ Buzzfeed is right. These Alexander Skarsgard pics made my ovaries explode...TMI, SORRY!

+ This is supposed to be Amanda Seyfreid but it doesn't look it. Airbush, much?

+ Once Upon A Screen gives a great overview of the Turner Classic Film Fest.

+  You can see the full short film Keira Knightley made with Karl Lagerfeld about Coco Chanel here...Umm, it's cute and okay.

+ Met Gala 2013 was held in New York City: Anne Hathaway showed up with blonde locks, Emma Watson was sleek in black, and 95% of the other looks were good, scary, or good and scary

Just for kicks I couldn't help but love this comment at Ohnotheydidnt.

Personally I think this is really great. Having some food allergies, I don't enjoy a lot of sugary treats that I love. UNREAL offers junk-free versions of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Milky Way’s, Snickers, M&M’s and Peanut M&M’s. The company guarantees the candy has the same great taste, but is made from real ingredients. It contains zero artificial flavoring, hydrogenateds, corn syrup, GMOS and has less sugar than other candies.

+ I'm not really a buzz for the International trailer for The Wolverinebut it has Hugh Jackman. So I can't complain.

After hitting the road as lovebirds on the Victory Tour, Katniss and Peeta's rouse has only just begun with an engagement. President Snow arrives to greet them, and with a nod of his snowy white head, gives the girl on fire his answer of convincing. That's what you missed from The Reading Games!

Peeta and Katniss are engaged, and I'm led to believe Snow did not approve of her attempts on the road to bewitch the poorer districts. She is preparing to go into the wild with her family, Gale and his family, even Peeta and his. When Katniss remarks on a sense of relief, I only feel a flood of heavy "holy shit" survival - in the woods with three families. It can't be done.

"Oh, the fun we two have together."
I'm not sure where Katniss' relief comes from considering that it's mixed with a wave of panicked planning. Though it's not like the stakes haven't been upped since the beginning of the first book, the confirmation of Snow's finals disapproval makes things more definite. The tide can't and couldn't be turned just the victors playing lovebirds.

After Katniss stuffs herself on the Capitol's gourmet food, I'm about as turned off by Octavia's incites of magical-potion inducing bulimia. Really Stephanie Collins? It's not that I'm surprised that this would be apart of the Capitol culture but still.

Luckily, Peeta is also turned off by this heinous act and grabs Katniss to boogey on the dance floor. In the middle of their dance, Katniss is introduced to the new gamemaker, Plutarch Heavensbee. His name just screams WUSSY, but nobody has proved that role in this series - so I won't completely say he is one. (page 79-80)

Interestingly Plutarch mentions how the arena is being built for the Quarterly Quell, and for some reason the Olympics popped into my head. Perhaps because Panem's land is so ravaged by districts they don't have the 'resources' to move the games to and from different arenas. This goes back to me thinking how far does the power of Panem really truly honestly reach if they keep the arena close to home so it can be controlled?

Returning back to the train, everyone retreats back to their individual compartments; Katniss is joined with Peeta where her nightmares continue and she talks of a dream she had with Rue. Though it's sweet that BreadBoy responds by saying that he doesn't get nightmares when he's with her, sometimes I feel he only adds to Katniss list of **** she just can't handle right now. His odes of affection are charming but probably make her feel 100x more helpless than she needs to feel. (page 86)

Heading home to District 12, Katniss and Peeta aren't allowed to see their families until the Harvest Festival ( a grand dinner). Instead she's invited to the Mayor's house, where Katniss' only other friend Madge resides. I like that Katniss has someone else to talk other than boys she can't be with, but her visit with the blond daughter doesn't last long or go well.

Effie keeps Katniss on schedule from chatting with Made before long, and has her prepping for the feast later in the evening. On the television in a vacant study, Katniss overhears on the television a news alert: District 8 has begun an uprising. THIS. IS. NOT. GOOD.

Jack Reacher (2012)

$

0
Starring:Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Werner Herzog, and Richard Jenkins
Directed By: Christopher McQuarrie

Genre:Action/Thriller
Rating:95% Awesome
Just Two Cents:A violent yet suspenseful ride.

Summary:Based off a book Jack Reacher, Tom Cruise plays the title character. Reacher is an ex-military man who roams the country (U.S.) with nothing but the clothes on his back and a foldable toothbrush. After a massive shooting by another ex-military officer, the gunman asks for Jack Reacher - who begins working with the defense attorney, Helen Rodin.

The blockbuster formula is annoyingly and terribly simple. There's an ex-military man without a life who can severely injure or kill would-be predators (Cruise), a woman sidekick chemist of sexual attraction (Rosamund Pike), and a bad guy (Werner Herzog) who you want to see the crap get kicked out of him. Jack Reacher won't very much change your opinion about action flicks, but if you're looking for a more violent Skyfall (2012), this a similar flick to keep in mind.

Due to the coincidental nature of the Sandy Hook tragedy and Boston bombing and this films recent release, it should be known that Jack Reacher has a lot of violence.

The opening sequence alone is unlike you've ever seen before. A gunman is seen loading his weapons in an empty parking lot, and for the next two/three minutes - we as the audience see his targets as the scope of the gun. We watch the gunman trailing six innocent civilians as they run for their lives and get killed. And, that's not it; the movie includes knife fights, asphyxiation, an awesome bumbling fight with a steel bat and crowbar, more guns, and choreographed combat.

Best Bits: Tom Cruise is an ass-kicker. He generally gets a bad rap for making  flicks like these. With characters like Jack Reacher, he is the only movie star today who adequately creates good guy vs bad guy films that at least have a little substance. Rosamund Pike as defense attorney Helen Rodin is Reacher's one main contact throughout the film. Pike is a good pair to Cruise; not making her role as an attorney too objective-minded to like her. And, I wouldn't say other actors like Richard Jenkins and Werner Herzog are wonderfully likeable or unlikeable; the movie is more Cruise and Pike's show.

The story itself is typically basic, as said before. The big bad anonymous guy goes through hoops and ladders to kill one person, and all of his plans are identified by the good guy. Why do six civilians lose their lives? The movie every half hour or so reveals and answers questions, so it's intriguing enough to keep you watching.  Overall it's a suspenseful, yes violent ride, to find out who the villain is and take him down. And, Cruise really takes 'em down.

More Favorite Moments From The Office

May 16th 2013 is the day we all say goodbye to our friends at The Office, but we never have to say goodbye to the memories. After hitting my favorite episodes of the nine-year runnin' sitcom, my brain started drilling up other moments of awkward brilliance that I couldn't pass up. There's no doubt that there are plenty more that could have been picked, but they'll never be forgotten either.

Favorite opening: Stress Relief
The Office had a lot of great subtle openings with Michael waxing poetic about his life or Jim working a prank on Dwight. One of the many great openings is this hilarious fire drill started by Dwight in Stress Relief. Schrute turns the tables on the entire office who don't think his security and safety measures are worth the time. No, nobody stays calm like they should.

Favorite Anti-Toby moment: Frame Toby
Who doesn't think of this scene in times of inner crises? After Michael's girlfriend Holly is (wrongfully) transferred to another branch because of their romance, Toby returns after his horrible get-away trip to Puerto Rico. The change in Human Resources and the return of an evil snail prompts one of the best PLEASE DEAR GOD NO moments ever.

Favorite Conference Room Meeting: The Convict
When the Scranton Branch absorbs employees from the Connecticut branch, a leak is made that one of the new employees was previously incarcerated. As the office becomes excited and interested by the ex-convict's time in the klink, Prison Mike makes an appearance in the conference room to tell them how serious jail is.

Darryl taught Michael how to be Hood. Splickety Splack.

Jim vs Dwight
Words can't express this amazing rivalry of frenemies.

Underrated Character & Actor: Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner)
Kevin Malone wasn't exactly a bright man or one to capture ladies' hearts. On the show, his excessive appetite, sexual creepy lust and slow ability to catch on were spotlighted the most in storylines. Often though I looked at Kevin and was amazed by the talent of Brian to really inhabit all of Kevin's bumbling qualities and make them come to life. A true actor is one who can take a character that lacks common sense and only has eyes for carnal desires and make him feel truly realistic.

Michael & Dwight
They had us at "Dwight, you ignorant slut" or maybe even before. One of the most treasured friendships on the show, Michael and Dwight were all kinds of wrongand right. Constantly overshadowing each other their personalities pretty much blended into one. I couldn't evenbegin to thinkof a favoritemoment shared between the twobecause they had so many. I wish I had a four hour montage of all of their moments because Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson were truly exceptional. It's a crime they both rarely won for their performances.

Classic Creed.

PB&J
"When you're a kid you assume your parents are soulmates. My kids are going to be right about that. I guess it also means that sometimes love affairs look different to the people inside them."

Jim and Pam's will-they-or-won't-they friendship at the beginning of series was one of the big hooks for fans to watch. Many say that the show lost its edge when they finally hooked up, but I always found - no matter how frustrating or boring the episodes were written - their relationship had plenty of realistic ups and downs. In this final season their marriage was really tested with ideas/possibilities of an affair, long distance traveling, and couples therapy. It'll be great one day to look back at the huge arc their relationship had.

 Favorite Blooper Series: Season 4
Whenever I need something boost my day, there's no doubt that I'll watch the show. But, there are so rarely good sitcoms that have really great bloopers. I love watching the outtakes because I genuinely feel I'm having as much fun as their goof-ups as they are. The same moments never fail to make me laugh, even if I've seen them a hundred times. It was definitely rough to pick one season so I have second places: 2, 3, 7

This job was really hard.
I hopeit left you satisfied and smiling.
That's what she said!

Living near the Disneyworld area I have a cool opportunity to see some great displays at the Disney theme parks, especially when it comes to the movies they are all abuzz about. One recent display at Epcot during the current International Flower and Garden Festival was a play area for their latest flick Oz The Great and Powerful. It was a fun little walk through of images of the films characters and small games to play. Throwing beans through the contortionist board, I snagged myself an Evanora button.

Science is Sexy: A Tribute to Ian Malcolm

Jurassic Park is getting a re-release into theaters in 3D on April 5th, 2013. If the childhood nostalgia isn't enough to have me riding a t-rex into theaters, the ultimate comeback for smart and sexy should be.I'm talking about the one and only Ian Malcolm: a rockstar scientist of colossal proportions. What better way to celebrate this blumin' character with excessive personality than with a little tribute.

He (tries to) set fire to the rain

He learns from his previous mistakes
(the earth moves get the hella outta there)

Takes his shirt off when he has a leg injury

Teaches while seduces:

He's Saintlike

He didn't argue:

He has a talent for spotting the obvious

Gives greatest life lesson in four words:

Not taken, ladies:

A butterfly flaps its wings, Malcolm takes his shirt off.
Oh yeah and a tornado will touch down somewhere.

Oz: The Great and Powerful (2013)

Directed by: Sam Raimi

Rating: 95% Changed My Life
Just Two Cents:Adventuresome yet cumbersome.

Similar to:The Wizard of Oz (1939), Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Oscar Diggs isn't a very good man. A showman in a traveling circus he swindles hopeful patrons with magic acts, rates his helper (Zach Braff) as less than second best, and uses a faux story about "his" grandmother's music box to capture the heart of any female that catches his fancy.

Lucky for him a twister is in town (especially since he's running away from one of those ladies' irate husbands) and escapes into a hot air balloon. Like the tornado that sweeps Dorothy Gale out of Kansas, Oscar crash lands into the beautiful ethereal land of Oz.

Played by James Franco, Diggs makes a male protagonist you can root for. Despite the creepy  smiles he flashes throughout the film, Franco carries an underlining of charm and scheme. It's acceptable to see why magic brings all the witches to his yard. Better yet he balances the dry wit with the quest of being in a new world with strange, quirky characters.
Before Diggs has a chance to settle the dust beneath his feet, three witches have their eye on him to save their land. Two of them, Theodora (Mila Kunis) and her sister Evanora (Rachel Wesiz), are the first to hit up Diggs for his so-called magic. Tempted by the witches' bewitching interest in him, Diggs goes along with the assumption he is the great wizard they've been waiting for.

Mysticism of a wicked witch destroying the land of Oz is made aware to Diggs. When Diggs is promised riches beyond his wildest dreams to cure their economic and environmental plight - it doesn't matter to him who she is. He has his eyes set on reclaiming that gold.

As excited as I was to see Weisz and Kunis as wicked witches, they didn't bring exactly what I had in mind to the table. Kunis' Theodora to me seemed to be as bland as a brick wall the second we meet her. There wasn't subtlety behind her trying to hide her powers as a witch; just plain one-note acting.

What Kunis is lacking, Weisz makes up for. Her Evanora is the witch behind the castle scheming to use her sisters' powers. Though some of her mannerisms were a little strange upon first seeing them, Weisz creates a female villain that is a little kooky and fun to find untrustworthy.
Setting out on his mission across Oz, Diggs teams up with two fabulous buddies, Finley the talking monkey and China Girl. My favorite scenes of the film happened between this golden trio. The chemistry between Franco and his CGIed companions made an enjoyable camaraderie. It's actually the first meeting with China Girl that Diggs faces the real devastation sweeping this magical land, and begins to take an active interest in helping those who are truly suffering and set his own ego aside.

The three of them go after Glinda The Good Witch from the North (Michelle Williams), who Evanora and Theodora made out to be the destructor of Oz. The bubble and fog wielding Good Witch from the North befriends Diggs with the utmost innocent sincerity and reveals to him the detriment of the wicked witch has caused her people.
Diggs is forced to question himself and not leave those who are in need behind so he can escape for his life or riches. With Glinda, he is challenged to pull tricks out of his hat he wasn't prepared for.

And a good ol fashion magical fight is put by the Wicked Witch(es). If you managed to hide away from her real identity as I had, the big reveal was something you eventually saw coming: Theodora.

Despite her dry acting in the first half of the film, Kunis' transformation into the Wicked Witch isn't wasted. When she dons the green face, oversized nose 'n chin, and black hat, I finally felt that Kunis was making good out of her performance. And even, perhaps because of the surround sound of the film, scared me out of my pants a little.

Pieces of Oz: The Great and Powerful aren't entirely perfect. There are cinematic issues where unnecessary close-ups are just plain awkward. Composer Danny Elfman never seemed to end his work on the Edward Scissorhands or Nightmare Before Christmas soundtracks as both scores squeezed into Oz. And some scenes between the characters forces the hilarity a little.

On a whole, however, Raimi made up for its script and direction issues with the films clever *hint hints* towards The Wizard of Oz (1939), wicked casting choices, and special effects. DEFINITELY, its special effects.

From the beginning of Oz: The Great and Powerful and its creatively animated opening credits, the movie is an imaginative ride. The castle at the end of the yellow brick road sparkles off the screen. Oz wasn't just emerald green, but glistening, wondrous, majestic emerald green. The costumes, meadowing fields, the Dark Forest and Munchkinland weren't just blues, yellows, oranges, reds, or violets. Each color was filled with vibrant shades that exploded off the screen. I never wanted to look away.

What I really wanted from Oz was an adventure; just a time to go to the movies and not watch something with an agenda of a villain vs superhero, heavy handed drama or slapstick comedy. Sometimes there needs to be a place in big budget entertainment other than science fiction or futuristic fantasies. While Oz had its little icky spots and ultimately strives to be a great movie, I can settle saying that it was a pretty good one.

The Office series finale was more than I expected. It was a fairly seemingly simple written episode with characters reaching all of the destinations I had dreamed of. We had some surprise returns and first appearances, and overall said goodbye to everyone. Very beautiful finale and very well missed show for me.
